Get excited everyone! descent and I are going to be attending Colossalcon 9 this weekend and we will be providing everyone with up to the minute live blogging. For those who are not familiar, Colossalcon is hosted in Sandusky, OH (previously in Cleveland but since moved due to growing attendance). I was able to do some blogging last year at Colossalcon 8 and it seemed to be pretty popular so we will be continuing to provide what people like to see.
They already have a schedule for this year up on the main Colossalcon website.

My own panel
I will be personally doing a panel for the first time ever. My panel is on plastic modeling and will be on Friday at 6 PM. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone is able to attend. It’ll be a lot of fun and I’ll be going over how to build a plastic model as well as demonstrating a few basic techniques.
Some additional information – I just recently acquired a Canon T2i DSLR camera so hopefully that means you’ll be able to expect some high quality pictures for our coverage of the convention. I will not be in cosplay for this convention because my Strider cosplay from Ohayocon had some issues staying together through the entire convention and I have not had the time to fix it up (link to a pic of the finished work). I am still working on getting a Megaman Zero cosplay together so be on the lookout for some updates on that in the coming months.
Also, as previously promised, we will be looking at switching up the characters featured in the main top banner.
Leave a comment if you have any character you would really like to see or if you have any input on what you want to see from our coverage at Colossalcon.
Today’s AMV feature one of our site’s current mascots, Shana from the anime/light novel series Shakugan no Shana. I first saw this well made video at my University’s anime club several months ago and really enjoyed how it showed off the first season of the anime. The video was produced all the way back in 2007 by ScorpionMP and you can find his other works on by following the embed link below to his channel. Kingdom Hearts and Rasmus fans might be familiar with the song “In the Shadows” that provides the background music for this 4-minute production.

This week has involved lots of Vocaloid fun for me. Fresh off successfully getting my MCAT exam out of the way I set out to add some unique album art of Miku and all her friends to my 500+ and growing collections of songs. It involved plenty of iTunes headaches and workarounds and some annoying use of PrntScrn and Paint but its been a fun time and its kind of neat seeing a little bit of every artist’s unique impression of the Vocaloids they use appear along with their songs when I shuffle. It also had me listening to and discovering dozens of new songs through some Youtube link-adventuring and we’ll be visiting some of my discoveries for this week’s pickups. Finally thanks to the Facebook Miku Hatsune fan group I saw the newly released preview of Sega’s Project Diva 2nd opening sequence which will be releasing to much fanfare later this summer.
Here is the aforementioned OP preview I mentioned where we get to see Miku, Rin, Len, and Luka rendered in fabulous detail in a school setting set to a background of a very neat Ryo song. Sure the gameplay graphics won’t be this awesome but nevertheless this 46 second clip already has me sold and dying of anticipation.
Onto the songs after the break:
First off, let me apologize for taking so long to finally get a post up. I’ve been pretty busy the last few weeks plus I was out of the country on vacation for two weeks. Hopefully I’ll be able to start posting regularly now.
I was first introduced to Lupin the Third when it was shown on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in 2003 when I was still in high school. I’m a bit surprised Lupin the Third is not more popular in the US but actually a major reason is that when it was being released in Japan there were still copyright issues for use of the name in Western nations. For those who do not know:
Arsène Lupin III is the grandson of the fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Daisuke Jigen, his closest ally, is an expert marksman who can shoot a target in 0.3 seconds. The two are occasionally joined by the expert swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII. Sexy but deadly femme fatale Fujiko Mine sometimes works with them, but she is almost always in it for her own interests. They are pursued by Inspector Koichi Zenigata of the ICPO who has devoted his life to chasing Lupin down.
Just recently, I have had the opportunity to read Fate/stay night in its entirety for the first time. Highly regarded and widely loved, it is considered by many to be famed doujin circle Type-Moon’s masterpiece. Over the past week, I have been able to find out for myself why. There are no spoilers in this review, so feel free to read on after the jump without concern.
As some readers of the blog, and all those listening to the music playing in my car can probably tell you, I have fallen absolutely in love with Miku and nearly all of her Vocaloid friends over the past month or two. Thinking about how to best incorporate that into a small feature on the blog I decided to start sharing a few of my favorite song pickups from the previous week to help interested readers discover new Vocaloid works.
Coward Mont Blanc, Vocaloid: Gumi, Artist: Deco*27
A beautiful sounding but melancholic song which somewhat metaphorically addresses a painful relationship. Gumi’s voice is fabulous here and the song itself is absolutely pleasing to the ears, for the Vocaloid haters its almost impossible to tell that one is used here. Definitely raised my awareness of Gumi works which I had never really listened to before.

Welcome to the second installment of my weekly AMV highlight. Tonight we have a somewhat lightly viewed AMV posted late last year by MissMissingHeart on Youtube. I discovered this video right after my sisters forcibly introduced me to some Owl City over and over again during car rides and after become somewhat hooked on a few tunes, I started looking for AMVs featuring his work. This multiseries production features one of my favorite songs, Saltwater Room. Despite its scattered images it the tune is still fitting and the visuals set the right tone making it a solid production. 5 Centimeters per second is used very effectively. Enjoy:
Hello everyone! Let me start off by saying that we will finally be getting things going again this week here at Anime Insights. After an exciting start a variety of demands on our time including a extremely busy end to the college semester for most of us as well as some overseas travel definitely curtailed our productivity. We look forward to getting back to covering a variety of shows and topics and will hopefully be bringing you our first convention coverage early next month.
I have done my best to keep abreast of this season even with the busy schedule and I must say that it has continued to shape up very strong indeed. Angel Beats continues to shine as the best show of the season through 4 excellent episodes since my last post and I cannot wait to be blogging on it this Saturday. K-ON!! and Working!! have been very solid and I have continued to tune in each week. Kaichou wa Maid-Sama has essentially been my introduction to Shojou story telling and I honestly have enjoyed it. Giant Killing is definitely a watchable sports anime. Finally I have to admit that B Gata H Kei and Mayoi Neko Overrun both left me unsure for a variety of reasons early this season but I have really warmed up to them and will enjoy watching their conclusions this season. There definitely is a little bit for almost everyone going this season and with Bleach finally returning from filler for some half-way decent episodes even Shonen is looking up in my book for the moment.
I guess I should spend a moment talking about Angel Beats Episode 6. Things definitely got real this week and the SSS fresh off deposing the cute, mapo tofu loving Tenshi aka Kanade Tachibana (whose name I LOVE) found out that the formerly though-to-be NPC Naoi was actually a sadistic hypotism-using murdering god-aspirant who suffered through his own terrible childhood which was rather hurriedly described to us during the homoerotic scene pictured at the top of this post. I have absolutely loved Kanade’s characterization over the past two episodes. After being starved for glimpses of her personality she has definitely made herself even more of a hit if the wave of fanart overtaking the internet is any indication. As for Otonashi, while not approaching the level of an iconic lead, I have so far greatly enjoyed seeing the story as told through his eyes. The emotion and deep thinking with which he approaches many of the situations he encounters sometimes borders on the over-dramatic but mostly just adds to the meaningful feeling many of the more somber moments of Angel Beats possess. I am somewhat surprised by the amount of Yuri hate that has been going around various online communities. Far be it from me to deny that she has been a huge jerk at times, especially to Tenshi, but nevertheless she is often shown being very concerned with her subordinates and is the only other character outside of Otonashi in the SSS who is shown deeply analyzing the developments surrounding Kanade. She was the first to begin theorizing on Kanade’s true nature and saw her entire theory behind the world they live in shaken once she confirmed Tenshi’s humanity, but kept her cool and continued on. Her latest appeal to Tenshi for help should settle the situation in everyones mind and while I enjoy Kanade’s character much more, Yurippe has many appealing traits as well.
We’ll be back later tonight with a bit more and other content is coming down the pipe for the weekend. Thank you for bearing with us during the lull and I look forward to hearing from you all. Lets end this post with some links:
- Translator irreduciblerepresentation has begun translating the remainder of the Angel Beats Illustrated Novel
- New Scanlation group Bakanahaven has begun translating the 2nd Angel Beats Manga, Heaven’s Door
- A collaboration of posters over at AnimeSuki helped to scanlate yet another adorable segment from the Angel Beats 4koma.

So chapter 103 dropped earlier this week and it was one of those transitional chapters. This chapter didn’t really reveal anything new; the inevitable Priscilla and Claire encounter is going to happen. It’s a matter of when and how many interventions there will be before it concludes. However, due to all of the revelations that a certain Claymore came across in the past few chapters, this series stands at a good chance of becoming unnecessarily long. In other words, while the Claire versus Priscilla remains the primary plot-driving force here, the whole other world business along with the Organization serves as whole other arcs. Like I said for 102, this series was/is on the cusp of either greatness or absolute trash with the resolution of this conflict, too bad 103 did very little to answer that other than that Priscilla has all of her memory back now.
