Ohayocon is billed as the largest anime convention in Ohio, drawing in just over 10,000 people last year. Last year was my first Ohayocon so I was expecting this to be as fun and awesome as it was for me last year. I pre-registered for a weekend badge but was not able to get to the convention until around 10 PM Friday night, meaning I didn’t even get to roam around until 11 PM or so. The reason I got there so late is that I was stuck in anatomy lab for medical school until 6 PM.
How this review is going to work is that I’m going to give a day by day explanation of things I did with some comments thrown in and then at the end I’ll have a general discussion section (makes this sound almost like a lab report for school or something).
We’re not affiliated with Ohayocon or any convention for that matter. We’re here to make unbiased reports. That means there will be criticism. It also means there will be compliments on things so don’t think we’re just being mean. With that please enjoy reading my review of Ohayocon 2011.
It’s a packed room just like last year.
They finally have everything set up, running two computers from a hotel luggage cart.
The original Toonami intro, even before TOM. It has the Thundercats, Sailor Moon, and the flying saucer as the mascot. From 1998
Another Toonami intro. He just asked how many people were at the Toonami panel last year. Only a handful of people raised their hands so he said he would be able to show a bunch of the clips from last year. Looks like it might be close to a repeat of last year but you won’t hear me complaining.
He prefers Moltar to TOM.
Intro featuring Moltar. It’s got Sailor Moon, Super Friends, Dragonball Z, Johnny Quest. Still 1998.
6: 21 PM
He’s going to show all five daily intros. He turned them all into MP3s and listened to them in the morning.
Sailor Moon, Thundercats (with a rape scene), Dragonball Z, Johnny Quest. 1999. Still with Moltar.
There were specialized intros for each show.
First up is Sailor Moon. “The music was cool”
Reboot is next. It’s one of those shows that uses CG graphics like Beast Wars.
Some of the commercials back then were pretty funny. It’s a Lawrence of Arabia commercial for Got Milk.
Cartoon Network had a lot of funny commercials of their own, including one about Cow and Chicken about working nude if it’s tasteful.
Dragonball Z intro. Lots of powering up.
At this point there’s even more people in the room. It’s standing room only.
TOM is now on. Gundam 08th MS Team
Next is Batman Beyond
The Big O intro. To be honest it really confused me when I first watched it.
Blue Submarine No. 6. I remember watching this after school on a Friday afternoon.
Dragonball the original series. I remember watching this during dinnertime as often as I could. Great times.
Gundam Wing. Somehow I missed this entire show during its run.
He-Man. By the power of Greyskull!
.hack//SIGN Never got into this show that much. I think I was really annoyed by the main character’s voice.
Hamtaro. Great show. I loved watching this every afternoon after school. Kind of ashamed to ever talk about it with anyone else at the time.
Johnny Quest. The actual intro is cool enough that Toonami kept the actual intro instead of making their own.
Powerpuff Girls. Another show that I watched a lot of mostly because I really loved Mojo Jojo.
Robotech, which is the US version of Macross combined with two other shows.
Sailormoon. Watched it in China when I was a kid.
Transformers Armada. I remember when this came out and thinking it looked too good.
Tenchi Muyo. Probably the first harem show I ever watched.
Voltron. Another show I watched as a kid. I actually have a hat in the basement at home.
Zoids. Pretty cool show and I really wanted to have the toys.
Outlaw Star. Loud applause from everyone.
Moltar speech about teamwork.
They started incorporating their internet games.
Another Moltar speech about Hero.
Requests for Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s a really good song and has a sweet intro.
Character profiles. Gundam Wing – Duo Maxwell.
Loud requests for Kenshin. I used to listen to the soundtrack all the time. It’s the English version of the song “Freckles”. I’m more of a fan of the Japanese version. Note to self – look into cosplaying the kid from it.
Midnight Run started around this time. Cowboy Bebop. One of the best intros EVER. It’s what got me back into anime in my teenage years.
Showing some final clips.
End of panel.
I was kind of hoping to stop by the “Guy or Girl” panel for a little bit but it ended up being really full so they didn’t let anyone else in. I’m currently sitting and waiting for the Toonami panel to start.
While he was waiting for him computer to load up he asked a few questions such as what the name of the first host was or what the original lineup was. For anyone who is curious, the lineups are listed on the Toonami Wiki page.
He started with the intros from each of the days of the week. The speaker said that he got all of the video clips from old VHS tapes.
There’s some technical issues going on right now – the video plays but he can’t get the audio to work. It’s not just the video file since he is trying to play a music file in Winamp and that’s not working either.
The issue is resolved after plugging in another cable. Hmmm…..
I’m not quite sure what I was expecting from this panel, but it’s nice going through a lot of the intros for Toonami. There are quite a few different intros since we’ve already gone through 6 for 1998.
Lots of clapping for Super Friends and Dragonball. Johnny Quest is getting some cheers as well.
They created their own mixes for a lot of intros, except for Johnny Quest which was awesome already.
They set the days of the week with a different intro every day. This started in 1999.
There was large amount of cheering for ReBoot and the Thundercats there is a clip of some humping between two characters. The original host was Moltar which was from Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
We’re now watching the intro for the Powerpuff Girls and some people are singing along and clapping at the end.
Watching the Sailor Moon Toonami introduction. The speaker says “I was way into that show.”
Tundercat intro. Thundercaaaats HO!
Lost Milk of Arabia commercial. Just because it was funny.
TOM is shown and there is general rejoicing. This is actually when I started watching Toonami so I totally remember all this. The ship Absolution and everything. I thought the animation was so polished back then. The room is completely packed at this point and there’s probably 20 people standing in the back.
There is currently talk about putting this on in the Pavilion later, but for now he just put all the clips on shuffle.
Teamwork Toonami clip. Super Friends, Dragonball, Johnny Quest, and Sailor Moon.
The original TOM, version 1 which is a small one.
Apparently the pick your race person in WOW is the same as the voice actor for Megabyte from ReBoot.
Dragonball Z intro with Frieza.
Another Powerpuff Girls intro.
Tenchi Muyo intro.
Moltar introduces Sailor Moon with “17 new episodes never before seen on our shores.”
Endless Waltz and Blue Sub No. 6 intro. There’s some Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing and Dragonball Z is also seen.
He’s skipping along through numerous DBZ in order to show some of the other shows.
Currently showing the Tenchi Muyo intro.
Midnight Run with Voltron, Sailor Moon, and various other shows.
Char makes an appearance for a movie on March 6 2000.
Ronin Warriors gets lots of requests and when it’s finally shown lots of people cheer for it.
Big O and Outlaw Start are getting requests as well. Big O intro is being shown first. Someone in the audience shouts “It had the worst ending!”
Cardcaptor Sakura intro – lots of girls cheer. I don’t think I ever watched that show.
.hack//sign introduction with a large amount of cheering.
Zoids: Chaotic Century Introduction.
Outlaw Star introduction. I really liked this show but could never catch it all on Toonami so I remember I had to download it.
It’s 5:00 so the panel just ended. This was a really good panel since it brought back lots of good memories.
